What is Kokedama?

Kokedama is an ancient form of Japanese garden art, related to bonsai. The translation of “koke” meaning moss and “dama” meaning ball refers to the structure in which the plant’s roots are held. These hybrid bonsai shapes could be found honoring shrines in temples and homes for generations. Today, kokedamas can be found everywhere you find houseplant enthusiasts. Kokedama needs all the same things your houseplants do: light, water, and air.

Our plants live in moist soil which is formed into a ball shape, then wrapped in moss and secured with twine. The moss allows for greater airflow among the roots, which our plants love. Any plant can be grown as a kokedama, but we specialize in houseplants that can thrive in anyone’s home with proper care.

Caring for kokedama is as easy as soaking the moss ball in a bath of water when it starts feeling light. When you buy a living sculpture, we will send you a detailed care sheet with specific instructions to keep your kokedama happy for years to come.

We invite you to experience the joy of adopting one of our interactive, live sculptures.
